8-Hour Operations-Level OSHA Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) requires employee training for those required to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances. The specific regulations are found in OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard codified as 29 CFR 1910.120(q). This is an 8-hour training required annually for employees acting as first responders at the operations level. Employees at this level are those who respond to releases of hazardous substances as part of an initial response in a defensive manner and from a safe distance to protect people, property, and the environment. Employers are required to maintain competency on an annual basis.
